The historical Kaunas Sports Hall, which began its path in 1939 and witnessed many victories and important historical events, reborns for new victories and new stories.
After Lithuania winning the European Basketball Championship in 1937, the championship had to be held in Lithuania after 2 years. However, there was no sports arena suitable for the championship. The hall project was assigned to Anatolijus Rozenbliumas, while the architectural part was prepared by Stasys Kudokas.

The construction of Kaunas Sports Hall began in December, 1938, and was completed in May, 1939. On May 21, the opening ceremony of the European Basketball Championship was held. When visiting Kaunas, William Jones, the FIBA general secretary, said: “The sports hall in Kaunas is the only one so great in Europe.”
Wooden tribunes are replaced with the ones made from reinforced concrete, the building’s thermal isolation is improved, the roof is insulated, and a heating system is installed. The first project author Anatolijus Rozenbliumas has contributed a lot to the reconstruction project.
After almost 70 years in Kaunas Sports Hall, the Zalgiris Kaunas basketball team moves into a new home – Zalgirio Arena in the Nemunas island. During a couple of the following seasons, the Zalgiris team returns to play in Kaunas Sports Hall for a few times.
In 2019-2022, the building was being reconstructed. Architect – Dalia Laurinaitienė. The facade was renewed and insulated facade, room plan was changed (spaces were set up also in the second floor), stationary and telescopic seating was installed to accommodate 2,500 spectators. Kaunas Sports Hall was tailored to host various (not only sports) events, extracurricular activities.
